Abandoned Cart Recovery Guide

Recover lost sales from signed-in store visitors who add items to their cart on your storefront but leave before reaching the checkout page.

Overview: How Abandoned Cart Recovery Works

Abandoned Cart Recovery automatically re-engages shoppers who add products to their cart on your storefront but leave before initiating checkout.

When a signed-in or recognized customer's cart remains idle past your configured inactivity threshold (e.g., 30 or 60 minutes), Cartwheel enrolls them into an automated recovery flow featuring a single-click magic restore link that rebuilds their cart items and directs them straight to checkout.

Prerequisite: Enabling Theme App Embed Tracker

Abandoned Cart Recovery requires the Cartwheel Recovery Tracker theme app embed active on your live theme to monitor storefront cart sessions.

Quick Setup Steps:

  1. In your Shopify Admin, navigate to Online Store → Themes.
  2. Click Customize on your active theme.
  3. In the left-hand navigation panel, click the App Embeds tab (the third icon from the top).
  4. Turn on the Cartwheel Recovery Tracker toggle switch.
  5. Click Save in the top right corner.

Every abandoned cart email includes a dynamic single-click Restore Cart Link.

When a customer clicks the link in their email:

  1. Rebuilds Cart: Cartwheel automatically reconstructs the customer's cart with all original products, variants, and quantities.
  2. Preserves Cart State: Line item selections, variant options, and quantities are preserved exactly as left.
  3. Instant Checkout Redirect: The shopper is taken directly into the checkout flow with their cart reconstructed, ready to complete payment without having to re-select items.

Automatic Cancellation Safeguards

Cartwheel automatically protects your customers from unwanted recovery emails:

  • Order Completed Cancellation: Once the customer completes a purchase, Cartwheel's orders/paid webhook fires instantly, cancelling all remaining scheduled steps.
  • Cart Emptied / Converted: If a customer checks out or finishes their order, the cart session is marked as converted and unenrolled.
  • Unsubscribe Compliance: Every email includes a one-click unsubscribe link in the footer.
